Students embrace NAPLAN

Deputy Principal Academic Thom Marchbank reports on this year's NAPLAN testing

This week, IGS students joined the rest of the nation in completing the annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for Year 3, 5, 7 and 9, as administered by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA). NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents and carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time.

Students in Primary did their tests in their home rooms with their home class teachers, while Year 7 and 9 did the tests in the School Hall to familiarise themselves with examination conditions.

“The tests are conducted online via laptops for most students,” said Deputy Principal Academic, Thom Marchbank, “except Year 3 for the Writing test. The online platform is actually quite an engaging one, and we found that students quickly get the hang of what’s required. We were so delighted with the enthusiastic way that students embraced the chance to show what they know and can do, and I would like to congratulate all Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for the way that they engaged with this valuable testing.”

The online platform and testing in Term 1 means that results are available from Term 3. The School will share details of results release when they become available later in the year.
