Online Exchange with Japanese High School Students

Year 10 and Accelerated Year 11 Japanese students participated in an online exchange with students from a senior high school in Japan. The session provided a valuable opportunity for students to communicate authentically with peers their own age, using both Japanese and English to share ideas, ask questions and learn more about each other’s lives, education systems and cultures.

A young Japanese secondary school student sits at a table, using sign language while video chatting on a laptop as part of an online exchange programme. Others with laptops sit nearby, and the background features round windows and modern furniture.

Experiences such as these are an important part of language learning, allowing students to move beyond the classroom and use their language skills in meaningful, real-world contexts. Our students demonstrated enthusiasm, confidence and curiosity throughout the exchange, engaging thoughtfully with their Japanese counterparts and embracing the challenge of intercultural communication.

The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a strong desire to participate in similar exchanges in the future. We look forward to continuing to build international connections that enrich our students’ language learning and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Thank you Regine Berghofer Director of Languages and Hiroko Yamaguchi for facilitating this enriching opportunity for our students.
