Middle School Explore Culinary Fusion at Sydney Fish Market

Year 7 and Year 9 students participated in the Culinary Fusion Experience at Sydney Fish Market, taking part in a learning opportunity that combined culinary skills, sustainability and real-world industry knowledge.

Throughout the program, students explored the journey of seafood from ocean to plate, gaining insight into the factors that influence the industry including sourcing, freshness, nutrition, food safety and sustainability. Working in a professional kitchen environment, they developed practical food preparation techniques while learning about the importance of responsible and sustainable food practices.

Students had the opportunity to prepare a variety of seafood and ingredients, refine their knife skills and work collaboratively to create a range of dishes. Along the way they applied safe and hygienic kitchen practices and experienced the teamwork, organisation and attention to detail required in a commercial cooking setting.

The Culinary Fusion Experience also encouraged students to think beyond the kitchen, exploring the economic, environmental and business considerations that shape the food industry. By connecting practical learning with broader concepts, the program fostered creativity, critical thinking and innovation.

The experience provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage with learning in an authentic setting, build confidence through new challenges and develop a deeper appreciation for the people, processes and decisions involved in bringing food to our tables.

Congratulations to all Year 7 and Year 9 students who embraced the experience with enthusiasm and curiosity. Thank you also to the teachers who accompanied students and contributed to the success of the experience through their encouragement and support.
