Quantum Futures

During National Science Week, a group of Year 9 to 11 students stepped into this rapidly emerging field at Quantum Future Talent: From Curiosity to Career, hosted by the Sydney Quantum Academy at The Concourse, Chatswood.

The event brought together students, researchers, universities and industry professionals to explore the science, technology and career opportunities shaping Australia’s growing quantum sector. Quantum technology is already driving advances in areas including secure communication, drug development, precision sensing and powerful new forms of computing.

Students heard from leading voices in the field, including Scientia Professor Andrea Morello from UNSW Sydney, alongside speakers representing Questacon, Diraq and Emergence Quantum. The program also featured a Quantum Engineering student, giving students the opportunity to hear directly about the pathways that can lead from curiosity in science to a career in this emerging industry.

Following the presentations, students explored the Quantum Exhibition, engaging with interactive demonstrations and representatives from universities, research organisations and industry partners. Exhibitors included CSIRO, UNSW Sydney, the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, UTS, Questacon, Einstein-First and Emergence Quantum, among others.

A highlight of the day was seeing a live experiment from Emergence Quantum, bringing the complex science behind quantum and next-generation computing to life.

The excursion offered students a valuable opportunity to discover the many pathways emerging within the quantum sector, from quantum computing and engineering to software, research and industry. As the field continues to grow, so too will the need for people with diverse skills, backgrounds and a willingness to explore what is possible.

Thank you to Liz Turner Head of Science, Roger Kennett Assistant Head of Science and Amelia Phillips Career Advisor, for organising this valuable opportunity for our students.
