Exploring the Impact of AI on Young People

On Friday 5 June, Year 11 students Fin, Elliot and Mahan represented IGS at the NBCS AI Summit, a student-led event exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on young people and its growing influence on education, careers and society.

Held at Northern Beaches Christian School, the summit brought together senior students from a range of schools to engage with leading voices in the field of artificial intelligence. Co-hosted by Professor Danny Liu from the University of Sydney, the event provided students with the opportunity to hear from academic and industry experts, gaining valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges presented by AI.

Throughout the day, students collaborated with peers from other schools, participating in discussions about the role of AI in education and the future of work. They were encouraged to think critically about how emerging technologies are shaping the world around them and to consider the responsibilities that come with their use.

“The most valuable thing about the day was learning about the actual functioning of large language models and how we can optimise our learning without giving up our actual critical thinking skills.

It’s important to be informed about AI as you can make personal decisions on your usage when comparing it to your values. It’s also important because AI is a tool, and being informed on its usage can both make it more efficient and stop yourself from using it as your own brain.” – Year 11 Finian M

A key component of the summit was the development of a student-written open letter to industry and government leaders. Through this initiative, students contributed their perspectives and recommendations on the future of education in an increasingly AI-driven world.

The summit provided a valuable opportunity for IGS students to engage with one of the most significant technological developments of our time while contributing to important conversations about its impact on future generations.
