A Window into Language and Culture

Recent excursions gave IGS students the opportunity to experience new ideas, perspectives and cultural connections through immersive language days.

Spanish Beginners Explore Film and Food

Students in Years 10 and 11 Spanish Beginners attended the Spanish and Latin American Film Festival at Palace Cinema Central where they experienced Spanish through authentic storytelling and language.

Watching a film in Spanish provided valuable opportunities to hear native speakers, develop listening skills and build confidence in understanding the language in context. The film also offered insights into the diverse cultures, traditions and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world, enriching students’ understanding of the language they study.

Following the screening, students visited Radio Taco, where they enjoyed Mexican cuisine and explored another aspect of Spanish-speaking culture. Sharing a meal together helped students connect their language studies with the rich cultural experiences that accompany them.

German Students Visit the Goethe-Institut

German students also enjoyed an enriching day at the Goethe-Institut, where they participated in a series of intensive HSC Oral workshops focuses on developing the students’ German speaking skills and familiarising them with the format of the HSC Oral Examination.

Run by experienced Stage 6 German teachers, students had the opportunity to engage in authentic language activities and collaborate with fellow German learners from schools across Sydney and beyond. These interactions encouraged students to use their language skills in a supportive environment while building confidence in spoken German.

The experience provided valuable opportunities for students to connect with a wider community of language learners, practise real-world communication and deepen their appreciation of German language and culture.

Thank you to Language Teachers Ms Sofia Thompson and Dorothee Sarnes-Trupke for organising these valuable learning opportunities for our students.
