Selected students from Years 10 and 11 recently had the opportunity to step into the world of technology and explore future career pathways through a mentoring session with Google.
Held on Thursday 30 July, the session brought together IGS students and Google volunteers working across a diverse range of fields, including software engineering, legal, program management, human resources, education, networks and cybersecurity.
Throughout the afternoon, students participated in a series of small-group speed mentoring sessions, gaining first-hand insights into the experiences, skills and pathways that shape careers in a global technology organisation.
The first rotation focused on skill development and career paths, with Google mentors sharing their personal career journeys and discussing emerging industry trends. Students were encouraged to consider the skills they are developing now and how these could translate into future opportunities.
The second session explored networking, internships and handling setbacks, highlighting the value of work-integrated learning and building professional connections. Mentors also shared experiences of navigating challenges and setbacks in their own careers, giving students practical perspectives on resilience and adaptability in the workplace.
In the final rotation, students explored functional insights and future planning, considering different career strategies and the employability skills that will be increasingly important in a changing workforce.
The afternoon concluded with a mock interview and feedback session, giving students the opportunity to put their communication and interpersonal skills into practice while receiving feedback from industry professionals.
The mentoring session provided students with more than an insight into careers at Google. It encouraged them to think critically about their own strengths, interests and future aspirations, while developing practical skills and confidence to support their transition from school into further study and the world of work.
