Chess enthusiasts at IGS had plenty to celebrate this year in the Interschool Chess Challenge run by the Sydney Academy of Chess. Across both the heat and the semi-final rounds, our students showed real skill and determination on the board.
The competition began on 27 May when IGS sent a strong contingent of 10 students to a heat hosted at International French School. It was a standout day for the team – IGS placed first overall as a school – and Year 12 Zach G capped things off by finishing as the highest-scoring player of the day with a perfect undefeated record of 7/7 points.
That result was strong enough to send five students through to the semi-final held on Friday 21 August at the Sydney Academy of Chess.
The field was tough this time around and the team narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Still, it was a fantastic effort and a fitting way to close out another strong season of chess for IGS.
Congratulations to all the students who represented the School so well throughout this year’s program!
