Year 12 Biology explore the Museum of Disease

Our Year 12 Biology class undertook an interesting excursion to the Museum of Disease at the University of NSW on Thursday 18 May.

Exploring the exhibits, looking at samples and meeting experts left Year 12 Biology with a deep appreciation of the numerous infectious and non-infectious diseases that affect the lives of countless people across the world. Learning about historical events, such as the bubonic plague and smallpox, as well as current issues, such as diabetes, illustrated the deep impact of these diseases on an individual’s overall health, quality of life and cost to the community.

Two young men stand in front of a display case at the Museum of Disease, examining anatomical exhibits. One points at something while the other looks on. A poster about the stomach, helpful for Year 12 Biology, is visible in the foreground.

This engaging and thought provoking experience gave a broader context to learning Module 7: Infectious Disease and Module 8: Non-Infectious Disease, and highlighted social and cultural perspectives that are entwined with the ability to identify, treat and prevent disease.
