IGS recently welcomed opportunities to deepen connections with Chinese culture and education, with students participating in a Cultural Day at the Chinese Garden of Friendship and the School hosting a delegation from the China National Academy of Educational Sciences (CNAES).
Celebrating Chinese Culture at the Chinese Garden of Friendship
Three IGS students, Dara H, Genevieve E and Tilly B, recently attended a Cultural Day at the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour, joining participants from across the community to learn more about Chinese culture and traditions.
Dara was honoured to serve as MC for the day, providing an opportunity to develop his confidence and communication skills while taking on a formal public-speaking role.
Following the opening ceremony and a series of cultural performances, the students participated in a range of workshops exploring different aspects of Chinese culture. The day concluded with a traditional Chinese lunch, providing an opportunity to experience Chinese cuisine and continue connecting with other participants.
Held in the beautiful setting of the Chinese Garden of Friendship, the event provided a valuable opportunity for the students to engage with Chinese culture beyond the classroom and broaden their understanding through hands-on experiences.
Sharing Ideas with the China National Academy of Educational Sciences
On 22 September, IGS welcomed five scholars from the China National Academy of Educational Sciences (CNAES) for a visit to the School.
The delegation included Dr Wang Xiaoyan, Director of the Institute for Social Practice Education; Dr Li Yongming, Director of the Department for Educational Experiments and Cooperation; Dr Meng Meng, Associate Research Fellow of the Institute for Social Practice Education; Dr Xing Biqian, Assistant Research Fellow of the Institute for Social Practice Education; and Dr Su Peng, Assistant Research Fellow of the Institute for Social Practice Education.
Sarah Herbert Deputy Principal of Junior School, Regine Berghofer Director of Languages and IGS welcomed the delegation for a discussion about the School’s history, educational approach and language programs. Sarah introduced the history of IGS and its educational focus, while Regine provided an overview of the School’s language programs and commitment to multilingual education.
The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to learn more about IGS and for both groups to exchange ideas and experiences through a lively question-and-answer session.
The visit continued with a tour of the School, including a Kindergarten Italian lesson and a Year 9 Design and Technology lesson. These visits provided the delegation with an insight into the range of learning experiences at IGS and the ways in which language learning, creativity and practical learning are embedded across the School.
Together, these two events highlight the different ways IGS builds connections through language, culture and education, from students engaging directly with Chinese cultural experiences to educators sharing ideas about teaching and learning with international colleagues.
