Wear It Purple Day sits comfortably alongside the values we hold at IGS – vibrancy, connectedness and authenticity, and this year’s celebration was a reminder of how naturally our community lives them. For more than a decade the day has been a tradition at IGS, celebrating diversity and inclusion across our School community. This year’s theme Colours of Courage celebrates the everyday courage of LGBTQIA+SB young people and the allies, families and communities who stand beside them.
This year’s celebration began at the front of the School where students decorated the pavement with chalk while the P&C shared colourful pencils and bracelets, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere as families and students made their way through the gates.
Year 12 student Issy M performed a moving rendition of Where? from Kate Miller-Heidke’s opera The Rabbits, showcasing both range and depth in her voice and setting a reflective, celebratory tone for the day. During lunch the P&C ran a lively barbeque complete with music, raising funds to support Wear It Purple.
Days like this matter because they remind us that difference is something to celebrate. It’s a message woven into the fabric of IGS reflected in our vision Unity Through Diversity and in a community that grows stronger with the more perspectives, cultures and identities it holds.
