THRIVING AND EXPANDING

by School Archivist Phoebe Chin

By 1990, IGS was thriving. The School had settled into its new campus on Riley Street in Surry Hills, leaving financial challenges behind and welcoming a growing student population. In fact, IGS had grown so big, it soon outgrew the capacity of the Riley Street campus, prompting another search for more space.

As luck would have it, a suitable site was found on Thames Street in Balmain. Formerly home to the Christian Brothers School a Catholic college that had closed the previous year which was well-equipped with a science lab and library, making it an ideal setting for IGS students.

The new Balmain campus was officially opened on 13 April 1991 with a celebratory ceremony  featuring performances by the IGS choir and various ensembles. The guest of honour was the first female Minister for Education, Virginia Chadwick MP, who cut the ribbon.

Affectionately known as the Country Club, the Balmain campus served the School until IGS eventually secured a permanent home on Kelly Street.
