New Campus, Old Memories

by Phoebe Chin, School Archivist

On 28 October 2025 IGS welcomed back two figures from its early years former Principal Rita Fin (1987-1990) and Alum Michael Ho (1986).

Rita played a defining role in shaping the School’s history. As IGS’s first Deputy Principal and later its second Principal, Rita helped secure high school certification, championed the creation of the School Song then served on the IGS Board for many years (1992 to 1993, 2012 to 2022).

A woman with light-coloured hair sits at a desk in an office, hands clasped. Behind her are a filing cabinet and shelves with files, evoking old memories. A potted plant and papers pinned to the wall complete this black and white scene.

Michael’s journey began in Year 7 in 1986 when IGS operated out of a repurposed cosmetics factory. Lessons in French and Music took place in modest classrooms and research was done through encyclopaedias. Despite the humble setting, small class sizes created a warm, tight-knit community. Students spent recess and lunch times in nearby Ward Park. As an international student, Michael was challenged to learn a new language and find his place. At IGS, he was welcomed into a community that celebrates diversity and makes language learning part of everyday life.

A group of people pose and smile outside a brick building under a sign that reads International Grammar School. Some stand, whilst others sit or lean on the windowsill, cherishing old memories at the new campus, appearing cheerful and relaxed.

Although Michael’s time at IGS was brief, his return after nearly four decades was a moment of celebration. Walking through the campus with Rita, he was amazed by the School’s transformation and the impressive facilities that now define student life. The rooftop basketball courts particularly caught his attention, evoking memories of high-rise schools in Hong Kong and highlighting just how far IGS has come.

The visit ended with a nostalgic visit to the old Surry Hills site (now an apartment block) and of course, a stop at Ward Park. Despite the short tenure, Michael’s fondness for IGS remains a testament to the lasting impact of a single year.

Rita continues to support the School through sharing stories and treasures with IGS Archives, helping us keep our rich history alive. If you would also like to donate or contribute to our legacy, please contact School Archivist Phoebe Chin at archives@igssyd.nsw.edu.au or (02) 9219 6971.
