The Spirit of GRIT in Sport

As we begin Term 2, we take a moment to recognise several outstanding sporting achievements.. Across different disciplines, our students continue to demonstrate the spirit of GRIT – perseverance, resilience and commitment in the pursuit of personal excellence. Whether competing at national, state or local level, these achievements reflect the determination our students bring to their passions beyond the classroom.

Youth State Swimming Championships

Year 6 Chloe and Filippa competed at the highest level available to swimmers under 12 at the Youth State Swimming Championships at the end of last month. Representing their club with determination and composure, both girls achieved multiple personal best times across the meet.

A highlight was their performance in the 4 × 50m Freestyle relay 11-12 years, where they helped secure a bronze medal for their team, each swimming an impressive sub-29 second split on legs three and four. A terrific achievement that reflects their dedication, teamwork and growing confidence in the pool.

Good work, Chole and Filippa!

Rowing for National

Year 10 student Otis S placed 15th overall nationally in rowing last month – an outstanding result, particularly as he only took up the sport 18 months ago.

Congratulations, Otis!

Australian Surf Lifesaving

Year 8 Eloise R recently won a gold and silver medal at the NSW State Surf Lifesaving Championships for R&R. Competing at the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast, she won a Bronze medal in the 5-person R&R event and placed 4th in the 2-person R&R event.

R&R (Rescue & Resuscitation) is a traditional Surf Life Saving (SLSA) competition that simulates rescuing a patient from the surf using traditional methods, including a belt, line and reel. Teams are judged on absolute military precision, speed and technique, covering swimming, resuscitation (CPR) and drill/marching.

Well done, Eloise!

Handball Australia Sydney School Competition

Year 5 students Leila and Bella took on the challenge of representing IGS in the Handball Australia Sydney School Competition.

Competing individually, Leila secured an impressive 4th place, while Bella finished 6th in their court, an outstanding result in a competitive field and placing them 15th overall.

Congratulations to both with special mention to Leila, who was recognised as most improved and awarded an official handball.

The next East Conference competition is coming up on Sunday 14 June from 10 am to 12 pm. We’d love to see more IGS students, especially those in the Handball Club. Learn more and register for the next handball competition.
