Scholar Harriet excels

Warmest congratulations to Harriet Tonkin for achieving 100 per cent in English Extension 2.

Harriet also excelled in her Design and Technology major work, a redesign of Newtown’s Hub Theatre area using Archi Computer Aided Design (CAD) to incorporate a centre for the gay community.

Harriet, who achieved an ATAR of 96.05, said she had “a lot of fun” writing an absurdist and existential play for English Extension 2.

She attributed her successes to taking every opportunity possible at IGS and selecting courses that she loved.

Harriet joined IGS in Year 7 and threw herself into co-curricular activities including debating, Theatresports and Mock Trial.

“I loved pretty much all of it,” she said.

Through selecting courses she enjoyed, Harriet discovered she loved public speaking and research, activities she will pursue in greater depth at university.

“University is probably on everyone’s minds from the start of Year 11,” Harriet said, admitting she was undecided about her tertiary choices until the past couple of days.

Harriet is planning to study the flexible double degree of Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts at ANU with a PhB Science Scholarship.

We could not be more proud of Harriet and the entire Class of 2023 and we wish them all the very best as they step out of IGS, world ready.
