On Friday, our Junior School students gathered for a celebratory Music and Sport Assembly.
The day began with the School Song, setting a unifying and joyful tone for the morning. Year 4 Beginner Band opened the musical performances with Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven and Gallant March by Michael Sweeney, conducted by Mr Bruce. This was followed by the Year 4 Strings, conducted by Ms Buggy, who delighted the audience with Old MacDonald and a traditional folk song. The Year 4 Guitar Ensemble, led by Mr Scott and Mr Parker, brought energy to the stage with Mission Impossible by Lalo Schifrin, before the Year 5 Beginner Band, conducted by Mr Leung, impressed with The Halfway Bridge and Deep Pockets for My All Day Doodle. To conclude the musical program, Year 4 Keyboard Percussion, under the direction of Mr JB Smith, performed Party Rock Anthem by Michael Sweeney.
Congratulations to our Year 4 and 5 students and the many staff who presented such an outstanding performance. The program showcased a remarkable breadth of skills across the Band, Strings, Guitar and Keyboard Percussion streams. These performances reflected the depth of experiential learning that has taken place across Terms 1-3. Through their instrumental studies, Year 4 students have developed new musical skills and strengthened their ensemble playing, underpinned by the Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály methodologies within the Primary Music Curriculum. It was wonderful to see the students embrace this opportunity, applying their technical abilities and experiencing the joy of making music together. Thanks is extended to Nathanael Primrose-Heaney and Nikolas Glass for their leadership of the Instrumental Program, supported by our Heads of Programs Joanna Buggy, Richard Brus and Heath Parker, and all the Music Teachers and Tutors, in guiding the students’ instrumental studies.
The assembly also recognised student dedication and achievement through the Sports Awards and End of Term Awards, highlighting the many ways our Primary students strive and flourish.
The morning concluded with a rousing performance of the IGS School Anthem, United Through Diversity, sung with pride by all.
