Japanese Excursion to the Nihongo Tanken Centre

On Wednesday 18 June, 21 students from Years 10 and 11, accompanied by Hiroko Yamaguchi High School Japanese Language Teacher and Drama Teacher Adam Moulds, took part in an excursion to the Nihongo Tanken Centre at Kirawee High School. The centre provides a vibrant and authentic Japanese setting where students from Kindergarten to Year 12 can develop and apply their Japanese language skills.

Throughout the day, all students were immersed in Japanese language and culture through a variety of interactive learning activities. A highlight of the excursion was the Tanken Report activity, where students created and performed short skits entirely in Japanese. With expert support from Mr Mould, a Drama teacher, students enjoyed the preparation process and confidently showcased their speaking skills. Their performances were both entertaining and impressive, earning praise from Japanese native speaker teachers, Tanken Centre staff and Yamaguchi Sensei.

The day included a relaxing obento lunch in the peaceful Japanese garden attached to the centre, providing a perfect cultural backdrop. Overall, the excursion was a wonderful experience, combining language learning with cultural immersion, and was greatly enjoyed by all participants.

Special thanks to Hiroko and Adam for their leadership and commitment to fostering deep, authentic language learning experiences beyond the classroom. Their guidance played a key role in helping students engage meaningfully with the language and culture of Japan.
