Our STEM Leader Toby Dolph reflects on women in STEM on International Women’s Day
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s important to honour the incredible accomplishments of women in STEM.
Today, we highlight the remarkable journey of Dr Chien-Shiung Wu, a groundbreaking physicist who has made significant contributions to our understanding of particles.
Born in China in 1912, Dr Wu’s passion for physics led her to pursue a career in the male-dominated field. Despite facing discrimination and challenges, she persevered, earning a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and later joining the Manhattan Project during World War II.
Dr Wu’s most renowned contribution came in the field of nuclear physics. In a series of groundbreaking experiments, known as the Wu Experiment, she disproved the law of conservation of parity, a fundamental principle in particle physics. Her discovery revolutionised the field and paved the way for new understandings of the universe’s building blocks.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr Wu championed gender equality in STEM fields and inspired countless women to pursue careers in physics.
As we honour Dr Chien-Shiung Wu’s legacy this International Women’s Day, let’s follow her lead and keep promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM.
