Have you ever noticed a small figure repeated around the ground floor of the Reg St Leon Building? It’s called the Modulor Man and it’s one of the building’s best kept secrets. Similar to the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci, the Modulor Man by Le Corbusier was developed for scaling the male figure with one key difference – it bridges the gap between metric and imperial units. But what is the relation to a school building?
Regular readers and IGS veterans are aware that the Reg St Leon Building was once the Dalgety Woolshed. Woolsheds are defined by their vast open spaces which are easily adaptable to their plethora of needs. Di Jones of Peddle Thorp Walker understood that IGS’s design needed the same flexibility – room to grow with the School and adapt to its ever-changing needs.
There are three Modular Man figures on the ground floor.
- Down the right hand side of the mural
- Above the Hall entranceway to the stage
- Above the doorjamb on the way into Reception.
Have you spotted them all?
