Designing IGS to be World-Ready

by School Archivist Phoebe Chin

Languages have always been at the heart of IGS, shaping the way the School teaches, connects and understands the world. Building languages a dedicated home was a way of honouring that foundation.

This week we mark seven years since the Global Learning Centre first opened its doors.

On 23 May 2019, the Global Learning Centre for the Teaching and Learning of Languages was officially opened in a ribbon‑cutting ceremony with Isabell and Carl St Leon – a moment that was both celebratory and symbolic. The St Leon family’s presence at the opening IGS Languages’s permanent home signified the living continuation of Reg St Leon’s vision.

The occasion brought together leading language educators including Professor Lesley Harbon UTS Head of School International Studies and Professor Ulrike Garde Head of Department of International Studies, Languages and Cultures at Macquarie University. Foundation staff were equally central to the day – among them IGS’s inaugural Director of Languages Kathy Kerestes, whose early leadership helped define what language education at IGS has become.

The building itself was designed to support six language laboratories, each reflecting the character of its language through thoughtfully planned spaces. Alongside dedicated teaching areas, kitchenettes and informal breakout zones were woven throughout – spaces designed to encourage conversation, cultural exchange and confidence in using language beyond the classroom.

Seven years on, the Global Learning Centre stands as a place where that founding belief is lived out every day – in every classroom, every conversation and every student who leaves IGS world-ready.
