Harmony through Diversity

by School Archivist Phoebe Chin

From its inception, IGS has been a place where warmth, acceptance and cultural diversity were not just values but lived experiences. In an Australia beginning to explore difference with openness, the School stood as a welcoming home for families from every background. As global events prompted renewed reflection on connection and community, the School’s commitment to unity became even more meaningful.

In 2002 Primary School students celebrated their first Harmony Day, aligning with the United Nations’ Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Guided by the theme You + Me = Us, students wore orange or national dress, shared treasured family dishes, created vibrant posters and spoke proudly about the traditions and beliefs that shaped their cultural stories.

What started in the Primary School has since grown into a whole‑School tradition, embraced by a community enriched by many cultures. Each celebration encourages students to learn from one another’s stories and perspectives, nurturing a deeper understanding of the world and strengthening their ability to become thoughtful, compassionate global citizens.
