From Seed to Salad

After a semester of watering, tending and learning, the Primary School Gardening Club has finally enjoyed the fruits of their labour – or rather, a very fresh salad.

The students grew lettuce in garden beds at School, patiently watching their crops take shape through the term. This week, they celebrated their harvest by preparing and sharing a salad together. The verdict was positive – even from those who don’t usually enjoy leafy greens. “I forgot I don’t like salad!” one student remarked.

The gardening journey was guided by Assistant Head of Science Jennifer Arapakis, who not only taught students how to plant and care for a crop, but also introduced them to the science behind healthy soil, sunlight, nutrients and growth.

After a chat with students, it was clear that their learning had extended beyond the school gates. Several explained they had started watering plants at home too – an encouraging sign that they’re thinking more deeply about care, patience and sustainability.

The project offered students a hands-on way to apply what they’ve learned in class, while also encouraging a thoughtful connection to the environment and the everyday skills involved in caring for it.
