High School

The School's interdisciplinary approach to programming allows secondary study well beyond the NSW Board of Studies School Certificate requirements.

High School curriculum

IGS High School maths challenge

Students participate in Year 7 Maths Challenge Day

Our program for Years 7 and 8 aims to create a smooth transition into high school and maximise student engagement. The courses for Years 9 and 10 provide opportunities for enriched learning and critical thinking, while the expanded Senior program features stimulating choices across all faculty areas.

All subjects are taught to the highest level offered, including Extension level courses. Acceleration is encouraged and supported for students who are advanced in languages and other subjects. Our students' HSC results are outstanding.

We also provide a rich and rewarding range of school-developed courses for all students, including Thinking Mathematically, Craft of Writing, Practical Writing, Working Mathematically and the Independent Learning Project. Languages and Music are also an integral part of the High School curriculum.

Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8)

High School HSIE students engage with medieval history class

Stage 4 curricula are largely mandated by the NSW Board of Studies, with compulsory study in English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Music, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Science, Visual Arts, and Technology.

Students in Years 7 to 10 continue to study their second language (French, German, Japanese or Italian). Beginner language classes are available for students new to the School in Year 7. In addition, all students in Years 7 and 8 study a third language (currently Chinese or Spanish).

The curriculum is programmed to ensure a smooth transition from the primary years into high school, and reflects the special needs of students during the middle years. The program provides regular physical exercise, acceleration and enrichment for higher-level achievers, flexibility and student choice aimed at maximizing student engagement.

Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10)

Our programs include enrichment and acceleration opportunities

Stage 5 students continue their study of English, Mathematics, Science and PDHPE. In addition, students are required to study Australian History, Civics and Citizenship, Geography and continue their second language to the end of Year 10.

Electives in Stage 5 are offered in the following disciplines: Drama, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Music and Visual Arts. The third language can also be continued as an elective choice.

Every course is designed to meet the needs of individual students through program flexibility, enabling both enrichment study and individual course modification where appropriate.
