Opportunity and challenge

With a strong focus on health and wellbeing, Sport and Outdoor Education at IGS provides students with access to excellent facilities, including a hall, gym, rooftop basketball court, Wentworth Park, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre and our beautiful country campus in Kangaroo Valley.

Sports

All students develop lifelong health and fitness skills through participation in swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals. These events provide opportunities for students to progress through representative pathways, with the potential to compete at state level. Importantly, the program is designed to provide opportunities for all students to achieve their personal best and reach their full potential, regardless of experience or ability.

Reflecting on IGS’s focus on personal achievement together with teamwork, students also participate in a range of Championship and Gala Days across both team and individual sports throughout the year.

Outdoor education

As part of the School’s vision to develop world-ready, tenacious and confident individuals, students are encouraged to step beyond their comfort zones and embrace new challenges.

In Years 5-9, students attend Outdoor Education camps where they engage in a variety of activities designed to build resilience, independence and confidence. These experiences allow students to explore new environments, discover personal strengths and grow through shared challenges. Moreover, in Year 10 there is a bespoke Tasmania camp where Year 10 students venture forth in small exploratory groups with their intrepid teacher guides to experience and catalogue their own physical, emotional, personal, spiritual and imaginative journeys.

IGS also offers the opportunity for students to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) program (from Year 9-12). This program builds confidence, independence, and practical skills through activities like volunteering, physical challenges, skill development, and outdoor expeditions. It provides a structured way for teens to develop resilience and responsibility while enhancing future study and job opportunities.
