A group of 10 students from Years 7–11 recently took part in the HICES Sustainability Expo, a two-day event designed to build interest in environmental awareness and sustainable practice.

The first day saw students exploring sustainability across the city. Visits to The Bower in Summer Hill, UTS in Ultimo and Unwanted FC in Alexandria offered insights into sustainable consumption, university research and creative approaches to reuse. This hands-on experience highlighted how individuals and organisations are working to reduce waste and support meaningful change.
On the second day, students attended a sustainability fair at the Greenhouse Tech Hub in Sydney’s CBD, participating in practical workshops alongside peers from other HICES Schools. They shared ideas and developed strategies to support a more sustainable campus, strengthening their understanding of everyday actions that can create long-term impact and emphasising their role as young environmental leaders.
Following the success of the Expo, Year 7 students continued the momentum with a Climate Fresk workshop for their peers on 14 November. Trained earlier this year as facilitators, they guided classmates through a science-based activity that maps the causes and consequences of climate change using cards representing different components of the climate system. The workshop encouraged critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving and a deeper understanding of the climate crisis.
Special thanks to Mr Steven Oddy, Ms Bridget O’Donoghue, Ms Sara Ali, Mr Carmelo Fedele, Akshay S and Bianca C for their guidance and leadership.
