Where in the World Are They #12

This week we meet Jon Lasry (2011), Yuri Tomonaga (2007) and Monty Oldroyd (2013).

Paul Galea locates Alums living in Tokyo, Bangkok and San Francisco.

Jon Lasry (Class of 2011) Tokyo, Japan

I graduated 2011 and went to UTS to study communications, but decided to go traveling with my best mate Christian in Europe two semesters in and never made it back. Ended up staying and bumming around over a year, eventually living in Estonia, working at a hostel.

I moved to Japan from Europe early 2014 and met a girl called Nana who is now my wife. We’ve been together nine years and live in Kyoto where we own and operate a couple of CBD Dispensaries and cafes (@lull_kyoto). Actually our new location is opening November! I always had an interest in cannabis and it’s fun working in a budding industry here in Japan.

Although I took French all the way through to Year 12 at IGS I barely use it nowadays( sometimes if we get French customers, I’ll whip it out) and wish I could show off to Lucy Sensei my ペラペラ日本語!

Yuri Tomonaga (CLASS OF 2007) Bangkok, Thailand

Hey! I’m Yuri from the class of 2007.

I am currently living and working in Bangkok, Thailand at an interior design and branding agency company as an account manager and strategist. I am married to my lovely husband and will be having our first baby girl this Christmas 2023!

After I left IGS, I have always been in touch with my best friends Joo Kyung Lee, Ah-Reum (Jenny) Park , and some other friends. It’s been a while since my last visit to Australia, and hopefully I will get a chance to revisit it again soon. For anyone who remembers me, please feel free to reach me out through Facebook when you are in Thailand so we can catch up. 🙂 Cheers.

Monty Oldroyd (CLASS OF 2013) San Francisco

After leaving IGS I went on to do a Bachelor of Science in evolutionary genetics at USYD. After completing my honours I had every intention of doing a PHD but it didn’t quite work out. I ended up slinging beers at the Forest Lodge Hotel, serving many an IGS alum and teachers. While it was fun, I certainly wanted to get out of Hospo and went back to uni to do my masters in IT. This managed to land me a job in retail data analytics in 2022. From there my work offered me the opportunity to take the next step in my career in the USA. I recently relocated to San Francisco in September this year to start the next stage of life.
