In IGS Early Learning, we are incredibly fortunate to have Vanessa Hill, an exceptional Music Specialist with extensive experience. Vanessa brings a unique approach to Early Learning, engaging children with music in ways that are both educational and inspiring. It’s rare for any Early Learning Centre to have a dedicated music specialist, especially one who is with us three days a week. Here, Vanessa shares a bit of her story and career, but also her insights on the vital role that music plays in early childhood education.
At a young age, I knew I wanted to have a career that involved music, drama and dance. Interesting, as my own musical journey was not easy. I questioned, “What is beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics? Why had I not been taught the foundations of music?” This inspired me to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where I learnt different methodologies of music education including Kodaly, Orff Schulwerk, Dalcroze and gained my Accreditation as a Piano Teacher.
My career has been exciting and varied from composition to teaching. Some highlights include co-writing the Jingle Jam music and movement resources, the Munch and Move music for the NSW Department of Health, music for the Pathways to Resilience Trust, songs for Children’s Television including ABC Playschool and Playhouse Disney. I have presented many Professional Development courses and taught children in a variety of educational settings. Last term, I taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the Kids at the Con program in addition to teaching music and movement in the IGS Early Learning Centre (ELC).
IGS founder Reg St Leon recognised the importance of this and advocated for forming these important foundations in music from a young age. The IGS Music Literacy Program is deeply rooted in Kodály, Orff-Schulwerk, and Dalcroze pedagogies. This foundation is further enhanced by a unified language, enabling students to engage with rhythmic elements through the use of French time names. Research has shown that there are many benefits to a quality music education in the Early Learning years.
By bringing musical experience back to the child’s body, children are learning about and feeling music. The process of learning about beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics encourages children’s cognitive development. Based on the integration of Kodaly-based teaching methodologies, vocal activities build awareness of their voice and confidence in using both their spoken and singing voice. Movement develops gross motor and fine motor skills. Playing percussion instruments and using visual aids each lesson enhances musical experiences and understanding for children.
Whilst working in industry is rewarding, it is incredibly satisfying working with children. Their creativity, spontaneity and inquisitive minds are inspiring. To be able to use music as a vehicle for them to learn about themselves and the world around them is really special. Above all, music should be an enjoyable experience for our children where they are learning through play based activities forming a wonderful musical foundation.
NOTES FROM SARAH HERBERT Head of Children’s Programs
The Early Learning Music program is deeply embedded in the curriculum of the Early Learning program at IGS. The Music program supports children to become strong in their physical learning and mental wellbeing – an important outcome from the national early education and care curriculum – the Early Years Learning Framework. Children at IGS become effective communicators, using a range of tools and media, including music, dance and drama, to express themselves, connect with others and extend their learning – 100 languages of learning at IGS and a vibrant curriculum for our youngest learners.
