New Buddy Program

This week marked the launch of the Year 9 and Year 5 Buddy Program, a new initiative designed to strengthen student wellbeing and leadership across the School.

The program pairs older and younger students to build relationships that foster leadership, empathy and belonging. Year 9 students step into mentoring roles, while Year 5 students benefit from guidance and encouragement from peers who understand their journey.

This is not a one-off activity, but the beginning of an ongoing connection. The program feeds into the Year 7 to 11 Peer Support Program, allowing students to develop as leaders while maintaining cross-year friendships that enrich school life.

The launch was a success, with students participating in icebreakers that sparked genuine engagement and conversation. Early signs of connection and mutual respect were clear.

What students said:

“I didn’t expect it to be so much fun! My buddy is really cool, and I hope we get to do more things together.” — Year 5 student

“It felt good to be someone my buddy could look up to. I remember having a buddy when I was younger—it made a big difference.” — Year 9 student

“We’re not that different, even though we’re in different years. I think we’re going to be great friends.” — Year 5 student

“This made me realise how much of a role model I can be. I want to keep this going.” — Year 9 student

We look forward to seeing these connections grow and shape a culture of care and leadership across the School. Special thanks to Mary Duma Deputy Principal Wellbeing for bringing this program to life.
