IGS First Place in English Extension 2 and Modern History

Kasen Heiskanen

With an ATAR of 98.3 and the offer of an internship with the Federal Government for 2026, Kasen Heiskanen is “feeling pretty good to say the least”.

At the same time, Kasen is keeping his result in perspective.

“It’s just a number,” Kasen said. “People will forget about it. The experiences you’ve gained are the most important thing.”

Kasen, who joined IGS in Year 9, said the first thing he noticed about the School was how lively and natural everyone was.

“It was really different in a good way, not regimented,” he said.

“I couldn’t ask for more supportive teachers. They were available, not just academically, but to talk about life and other experiences.

“The IGS teachers went over and beyond. They had great rapport.”

Kasen went from not particularly enjoying English, to achieving First in Place in both English Extension 2 and Modern History.

Kasen also enjoyed taking part in History Debating, one of the many extracurricular activities available at IGS.

The high achiever was awarded the coveted IGS 2025 Global Scholar’s Prize at Speech Night.

With his eyes on a Bachelor of International Studies or Arts Law degree in future, he is currently enjoying spending time with friends and on activities which went on the backburner during the HSC, such as playing cello.

“This is the only opportunity in your life you have this kind of freedom,” he said.

As for his tips for younger students: “Talk with friends, family and your teachers to keep things in perspective.”
