Golden age of the IGS musical shines!

The 2022 IGS musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a glittering success for all involved.

“…close your eyes, make a wish, and count to three…”

Over the last month the IGS Hall was transformed into a magical theatre as Cast and Crew from the 2022 IGS Musical Company presented CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, a musical based on the whimsical novel by Roald Dahl and book adaptation by David Greig.

Audiences were treated to outstanding performances by all performers and musicians as they brought this show to life by interacting with colourful set designs, LED animations, bubble making machines and various sensory experiences, as ‘chocolate and bubblegum scent’ was incorporated into the theatrical experience.

The IGS Musical has grown to become a highlight on the School Calendar, and, in building on the success of earlier productions such as Grease (2019) and Matilda: The Musical in (2021), the students on-stage and off-stage certainly ensured that this production delivered a high caliber of skills in the disciplines of acting, dancing and singing.

The students’ presentation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was certainly a ‘golden ticket’ into the world of ‘pure imagination’ as the cast delivered exceptional performances of the songs from the original motion picture by LESLIE BRICUSSE and ANTHONY NEWLEY and new toe-tapping songs composed by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman,

Events such as these are not possible without the brilliant talents and dedication of our student production crew and hair-make-up teams, who were integral to the success of this year’s production.

We are incredibly appreciative of the artistic and creative vision of Director Peter Adam, Musical Director Nikolas Glass, Choreographer Shirley Firth, Set Designer and Costumer Peter Mussared , Stage Manager Noah Armesto and Administration Su Makisi. Thanks also to the Parent Teachers and Friends Association, The Music Faculty, The Charlie Production Team, The Charlie Orchestra, the IGS Communications Team. We are so grateful for the volunteer support of students, staff and parents who have ushered, managed front of house and assisted with ticketing. A big thank you to Simon Board and the PDHPE Departments and our unsung IGS heros, the Facilities team.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Principal Shauna Colnan and the Leadership Team for their support and encouragement, as this show came to life over many hours of rehearsal and preparation.

It is hoped that this musical has provided great meaning to each individual involved, particularly as one of the the major themes of this show was the power of imagination and in allowing your wildest dreams to come true. To perform in front of such big audiences is a huge achievement, and we are very proud of each and every student.

Ahead of the next musical, students are encouraged to join our Choral Program to continue building their singing skills and learn various vocal audition techniques. The 2023 Musical will be announced by The Principal at Speech Night on Monday 5 December.

With all the colour, dance, song, skill and energy of the IGS productions of Matilda the Musical in 2021, Grease in 2019 and Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang in 2017, the show leapt into life in a transformed Hall last week, to the credit of all involved.
