IGS students recently returned from the Senior Japan Exchange with unforgettable experiences, strengthened language skills and a deeper appreciation of everyday life in Japanese schools and communities.
During the exchange, students were warmly welcomed into their host schools, where they followed their buddies’ daily timetables and took part in a wide range of cultural activities and excursions. From the very first days, connections were formed through shared routines, learning and conversation.
In Osaka, lunchtime became a highlight of the experience. Student representatives greeted the IGS students with genuine warmth, creating an inviting and inclusive atmosphere. Over shared meals, Jude, Luca, Isaac and Connor enjoyed lively conversations in both Japanese and English, practising their language skills while building friendships.
At Tamagawa, language learning was brought to life through creative and engaging lessons. Alex and Tilly explored Japanese cities using yuru-chara and goto-chi chara – the playful and laid-back mascot characters that represent regions across Japan – making cultural learning both memorable and fun.
The exchange also offered insight into school life across different campuses. At Meikei, students experienced lessons in a large gymnasium and shared school lunches in a spacious canteen. Alex joined volleyball sessions during PE, while Amelie and Ace enjoyed their time with their buddies, further strengthening their connections through everyday moments.
The Japan Exchange provided IGS students with far more than language practice. It offered meaningful cultural immersion, lasting friendships and a greater understanding of global perspectives, all hallmarks of the IGS exchange experience.
