The CIS football season is underway and IGS teams have made their presence felt, producing committed, skilful and high-energy performances across two major competitions. From tournament football to knockout fixtures, our students have shown pride and a clear passion for the game.
Thea Slatyer Football Cup
IGS was proudly represented at the Thea Slatyer Football Cup with our Year 7 and Year 8 Girls competing strongly against a deep field of 14 teams, including several specialist sports schools. Across the day, the girls delivered a polished all-round performance, finishing second in their group and an impressive fourth overall.
Led with confidence by Captain Harper W, the team played with clear structure, composure and attacking intent. Just as importantly, they brought the enthusiasm and grit that has become synonymous with IGS football. Harper’s influence was recognised at tournament level, earning formal selection as one of the standout players of the competition.
The team’s efforts were well supported by Coaches Mr Baghdadi and Ms Laurans-Wall, whose technical guidance and encouragement helped the girls perform with confidence and belief throughout the day.
CIS Football Cup – Opens
IGS also entered the first round of the CIS Football Cup knockout stage with both Opens Girls and Opens Boys facing challenging fixtures.
The Opens Girls, captained by Isabelle P, were tested against a strong St Spyridon College side. In a tightly contested match, the team defended with discipline and determination to secure a 0–0 draw. The game was ultimately decided by penalties, with IGS narrowly missing progression. The girls now move into the CIS Football Plate, carrying valuable experience into the next stage of the season.
The Opens Boys delivered a commanding performance away from home against Al Sadiq College. Under the leadership of Captain Tyrone J, the team played with sharp movement, control and relentless attacking pressure, resulting in a 14–1 victory. The match also marked a standout start to the season for Tyrone C‑C, who opened the campaign with a double hat‑trick. The result reflected the team’s ability to move the ball efficiently and capitalise, earning them progression to the second round of the Cup.
Coaches Mr Baghdadi and Mr Sheihing-Vasquez played a key role across the day, providing strong technical direction while consistently supporting and motivating the students.
