On Wednesday 18 March, our Year 11 Biology students took part in a fieldwork excursion to Long Reef in Collaroy as part of their study of ecosystems.

Despite breezy coastal conditions, students engaged in hands-on scientific investigation on the rock platform, measuring animal abundance and distribution and recording field data. They identified a range of marine plants and animals, applying classroom learning in a real-world setting.
Fieldwork experiences like this are a core part of the Year 11 Biology program, supporting students to develop practical scientific skills including observation, data collection and analysis. Working in authentic environments helps deepen understanding of ecosystem dynamics and prepares students for senior Biology investigations.
The rock platform at Long Reef provides an ideal outdoor classroom, offering clear examples of the relationships between marine organisms.
During the visit, students were lucky enough to observe toadfish along with a variety of other intertidal species.
Thank you to Science Teacher Steven Oddy for leading the excursion and Anna Edwards and Robert Merrett for assisting on the day, supporting students through a valuable and engaging learning experience.
