ArtsFest takes IGS on a journey through time

Through the Decades

On the last day of Term 1, IGS was transformed into a living timeline as ArtsFest 2026 brought the theme Through the Decades to life. ArtsFest is a special and unique tradition at IGS that empowers creativity and collaboration, celebrating the incredible talent of our students.

This special celebration united the whole High School, which was flooded with flared pants, gold chains, bandanas, influential musicians, iconic landmarks and TV series characters from different decades, as students and staff embraced the spirit of their chosen eras with creativity and enthusiasm.

Three boys stand indoors at a lively ArtsFest event. One waves pom-poms in a floral pyjama top, another sports curly hair and a headband, and the third rocks a Nirvana shirt and shutter shades—a true journey through time at IGS.

Throughout the day, students rotated through a rich program of activities that showcased the breadth of their talents across disciplines.

The visual arts exhibition saw Houses presenting an impressive collection of artworks inspired by different decades. Paintings, sculptures, short stories and poetry reflected distinct cultural moments in time, demonstrating not only artistic skill but thoughtful interpretation of history, identity and style.

Drama and Dance performances transported audiences from decade to decade through movement and storytelling. Students reimagined defining cultural moments, musical influences and social shifts through original performances that were both entertaining and insightful. Short films added another creative dimension, capturing the aesthetics and spirit of past eras through a contemporary student lens.

The much-anticipated Costume Parade brought colour and character to the day, as students proudly showcased their decade-inspired outfits. From vintage classics to more recent trends, the parade was a vibrant reminder of how fashion tells the story of time.

After recess, the energy lifted even further as the Hall filled with music and anticipation, with students singing songs such as Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson, What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction, Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi and many more. Theatresports and musical moments created a joyful, shared experience for students across year groups, building momentum toward the final performances.

To finish off the day, each House took the stage to perform for the whole of High School, bringing their own take on Through the Decades to life:

  • Kuyal set Shakespeare head to head with ChatGPT – a battle between the classics and the internet age that sparked creativity.
  • Gura carried love across the decades, from Titanic’s Jack and Rose to unexpected alien companions.
  • Bamal launched a mission to save the IGS music department, with decades of sound going track for track.
  • Baado did the time warp, travelling through the ages all the way back to ancient Egypt.

The scores were tallied and the winners announced. Kuyal took home the ArtsFest Shield and claimed victory in the Whole House Performances with their unforgettable stage show, Shakespeare vs ChatGPT.

Congratulations to Kuyal for taking out the ArtsFest Shield, and well done to every student who participated throughout the day. Thank you to the many teachers and staff whose planning, organisation and support made ArtsFest 2026 such a memorable celebration for the whole School.
