We’ve had a happy and productive first week. Students, staff and families were beaming with excitement as they entered the IGS gates on Wednesday morning for the first day back.
It was a moving and special moment when Uncle Les McLeod welcomed us to Gadigal Land and wished our community a wonderful year ahead with a smoking ceremony. I won’t quickly forget the look of awe on the faces of our Primary School children as Uncle Les slowly walked through the hall with those smoking gum leaves.
At the Primary and High School Assembly this week I encouraged students to get involved, explore and keep an open mind to new adventures and new perspectives. 2020 is full of endless possibilities for our students, and I look forward to seeing where the year takes them.
Limitless Learning, Empowered Students, Sustainable Future – these strategic aspirations have driven our school forward from 2015 when they were first conceived, setting a clear direction, a high standard and a sense of purpose for our school.
Last week when we welcomed staff back to School, we began a new conversation about who we are and who we want to be as we look forward to developing the next strategic plan to 2025.
In this week’s Through Line, my weekly letter to staff, I noted the strong trends that emerged from our whole staff Collaborate Conference.
· A desire for us to push further and more wholistically into sustainable ways of thinking in all that we do
· We should more purposefully craft a program in altruism and service so that all IGS students (not just some) have opportunities to go out into the community and support others less fortunate
· Strong impetus for us to reimagine and redesign the school day; a school day that more overtly facilitates deeper learning.
I couldn’t agree more with these directions and I look forward to sharing more with you and seeking your insights about our school’s future directions in the coming months.
In 2020, I look forward to unveiling our new Centre for Dramatic Arts and the Bibliothèque, now well and truly under construction.
These new spaces will open up so many possibilities for our students, educators and community.
We look forward to sharing these beautiful new spaces with you as they open. In the meantime, I hope to see many of you up on the rooftop this evening as we celebrate the start of this school year and welcome our new families to our community.
All the very best for a great year ahead!
