Saskia Vander receives TAFE award

Congratulations to Year 12 student Saskia Vander, who recently received a VET Excellence Award.

Saskia was nominated by her TAFE VET teacher for displaying excellence in the completion of all aspects of her Hospitality course.

Saskia learnt skills such as food and beverage, customer service and how to work in the hospitality industry.

“I started the course last year in Year 11, which began with practical skills, and continued in Year 12 with the theory component where I learnt the logistics of running a hospitality business and overall customer service,” Saskia said.

“I knew it would be beneficial when I graduated from High School, as receiving my Hospitality certificate would help me get a job in that industry.

“I am also passionate about the subject itself. Last year was all practical work so I learnt so many new skills, such as making coffee and restaurant quality meals, that I could apply to a future job.

“I mostly enjoyed applying the theory to the practical, and getting real life experience in the industry. I did work placement at an events organisation and it was fascinating to watch what I had studied in action. It made me feel really excited about my future in the hospitality industry.”

Following her passion for working with people and in a high energy environment, Saskia is looking to pursue a job working in a hotel or a function centre once graduating from IGS.

“After I graduate I am going to pursue a career in the creative arts but, while studying, I plan to use my knowledge and passion for hospitality and apply that to working while studying,” she said.

“I will hopefully be studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts and pursue a job teaching visual arts.”

Her mother Sophie Vander said Saskia is a quiet achiever, “so it’s wonderful for her to receive acknowledgement for her hard work and dedication”.

“We’re very proud of her and can’t wait to see where her talents take her.”

Congratulations, Saskia!
