Mums rally around refugees

IGS parent and mother of two Sara Lubowitz is passionate about changing the lives of refugees.

On Mother’s Day 2017, Sara met a group called Mums4Refugees, and knew she had to be a part of it.

“I had to actually get involved and not just talk about it anymore,” Sara said.

These mums were visiting families of asylum seekers in detention centres, they were accompanying them to Immigration interviews and medical appointments, holding playgroups for the children.

“They were lawyers working on cases to bring sick children from Nauru to Australia for treatment. They would post a call out on their Facebook page to ask for donations for a sick mother or child and within 24 hours they had what they needed for that family.”

On 18 June Mums4Refugees are hosting an Art Auction with the theme ‘Rabbits’ and a  panel discussion in Surry Hills from 6.30pm where they hope to raise $10,000.

“The money will go to providing Care packages for families this includes clothes and equipment for babies, Emergency Medical Fund, providing food via Mama Penny (A food Truck from Addison Road Community Centre), Opal cards,” she said.

“We would love people to come along on the night and buy the Art and listen to our amazing panel of speakers.”

Those participating in the panel discussion include National Convenor of Mums4Refugees, Dulce Carolina Munoz Garcia, a GP who initiated the Kids Off Nauru campaign Sarah Townsend and Human Rights Lawyer George Newhouse and author Mark Isaacs.
