Legal learning

Our first IGS Legal Studies cohort visited Parramatta District Court to observe a range of different cases and learn about court procedure.

Students met with District Court Judge Culver who was pleased to see so many students interested in Legal Studies, and expressed the importance of knowledge in this area.

“The students also attended the Parramatta Local Courts where they witnessed bail hearings and a host of other matters,” said IGS Deputy Principal Staff and Innovation David Hamper.

“They had the chance to speak with a Magistrate, and were able to compare the operation of the two different courts.”

The opportunity to meet with a Judge and a Magistrate gave students true insight into the legal process.

“It was interesting to see the influence of technology on the courts, for example using webcams to speak to defendants in custody,” said Bronte of Year 11.

“It was also encouraging to see the number of female judges in both the district and local courts.”
