“Term 3 was most definitely a challenging Term for Visual Arts students,” said Director of Art and Design Drew Bickford.
“With no access to school art materials and studio spaces, our young artists had to rely on their own imagination, ingenuity and lateral thinking, to create their final practical task for the year.
“This challenge of off-campus learning turned out to be the perfect time to explore the world of Conceptual Art.
“For this unit, students made artworks from whatever they could find around their homes; utilising unconventional materials and finding new ways to express themselves.
“Conceptual art emphasises the thought processes and philosophies of artmaking over the traditional focus on technical mastery.
“As such, Year 11 investigated the exploratory pathways to the creation of an artwork, rather than the product itself.
“Each student was given a single, unique ‘prompt word’ from which an idea for an artwork could germinate. This resulted in some exciting examples of both material and conceptual abstraction.”
Congratulations to these and all of our students for exercising their ingenuity during remote learning.
