Engaging language students

IGS Japanese Teacher Lucy Howard-Shibuya builds strong relationships with her Beginners language students to encourage engagement.

She recently accompanied her Year 12 Japanese Beginners class to the JTAN HSC Beginners Speaking Practice Day at North Sydney Boys High School.

Assistant Head of Languages, Annamaria said the students were extremely grateful for her support and guidance and that they benefited from a day of speaking and interacting with other students and teachers.

Lucy said the great thing about a Beginners language course is its energy.

“The pace is fast and the progress is seen almost immediately by the teachers and the students,” she said.

Lucy said the language learning adds a dimension of maturity and fosters excellent peer and teacher-student relationships.

“The whole class becomes very close as they understand the sense of purpose.”
