Designing minds meet in historic moment

IGS Principal Shauna Colnan, original architect of IGS Kelly Street Building Di Jones and current architect Phillip Rossington of BVN met this week to review plans for the new IGS Bibliothèque.

PTW Architect Di Jones, sister of a former IGS Acting Principal Eddie Jones, designed the Reg St Leon Building in Kelly Street with a team of female architects ready for the School’s move to the site in 1997.

Eddie Jones had negotiated the use of the site in what had been the fire-ravaged Dalgety’s woolstore, through what was the South Sydney Council, before embarking fully on his spectacular rugby coaching career.

“As the original architect of our building, Di Jones retains a moral right to the design,” Ms Colnan explained.

“As we reimagine and redesign our campus, we wanted to ensure that she was happy with the design for our new Bibliothèque for the 21st Century.

“In this historic meeting of the architects, Di Jones endorsed our plan for one whole-school library in the heart of the campus, echoing her original concept design for the School,” Ms Colnan said.

“It felt like history in the making as Phillip Rossington took Di Jones through each aspect of the design.”

With Di Jones’s seal of approval, the Development Application for the new Bibliothèque will be submitted to the City of Sydney Council so that construction can commence in Semester 2 this year.
