Brechtian Drama techniques bring fairy tales to life

IGS High School students enjoyed performing original adaptions of classic fairy tales for the Drama component of their English unit for younger students.

Kindergarten students watched on in excitement, and made for a very captivated and enthusiastic audience, said IGS Teacher Megan Sampson.

“They gasped when the wicked wolf tried to gobble up grandma and giggled with delight at the love story of Cinderella and her prince,” she said.

“Year 8 made use of a range of Brechtian techniques, such as gesture, place cards, music and shifting modes to bring these entertaining stories to the simple Global Learning Centre stage.”

The innovative unit took place late last year. A number of English classes incorporate Drama in diverse ways at IGS.
