Beats start the week

Year 7 IGS students and staff enjoyed a thrilling display of culture, talent and energy earlier this week when they experienced authentic African rhythms and beats from African Beat’s Sydney touring group, The Salaka Ensemble.

Each student had the opportunity to play one of the Salaka Ensemble’s instruments, filling the School’s corridors with enthusiastic beats and voices as they played and sang along with the performers.

The Salaka Ensemble is a group of genuine African performers, who share their love and passion of African music. The group was formed by Master Drummer Tuza in Nungua, Ghana in the mid 1990s, when the members were young teenagers.

“Salaka” means “sharing”, thus the group aim to share African music experiences with both corporate and educational groups.
