An exploration of the digital landscape

IGS staff from the English Department and ICT Integrator Rukhshanda Zaman explored digital landscape opportunities in a recent professional development session.

The course focused on virtual reality (VR), including the phenomenology of the technology, as well as its policy, economic and ethical implications and its exciting and disruptive applications in the classroom.

Staff enjoyed the opportunity to try it out the headsets.

“Soon we found ourselves gaping in wonder at situated, embodied media, such as a 360-degree performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in which you are the Ghost; or feeding time at Melbourne Zoo’s penguin enclosure; or stumbling through 3D challenges,” Head of English Thom Marchbank said.

“Staff found it a truly immersive and eye-opening taster of what we can do with VR, and the English Department is excited to start to incorporate this technology into our teaching.”
