HalfCut aims to protect crucial forest habitat for vulnerable species, give back Country to Traditional Custodians, and plant trees to address the climate emergency.
In 2021 every $2.50 raised will protect 1 sqare metre of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. This is so important because with over 50 per cent of the world’s forests gone and only 3 per cent of global rainforests left across the world, we need to act now.
Did you know IGS last participated in HalfCut and BraidsOn in 2018?
IGS raised $17,158.70, where the funds protected thousands of acres of rainforests globally.
We’ve also been involved in the PSS Challenge in 2021 raising $2,036 for rewilding wildlife habitat!
I first went HalfCut in 2018 but now I’m going HalfCut this year for the beautiful wildlife that call the Daintree Lowland Rainforest home.
Did you know that the Daintree has over 10,000 species but yet 142 are rare, threatened and endangered plant species and 44 are rare, threatened and endangered animal species (many of which are endemic to the Daintree)? This is because of the exacerbation of fragmentation, climate change, introduced species and weeds!
But by going HalfCut I’m doing my part in ensuring Traditional Custodianship and the retention of our native species. Your turn!
We are participating in HalfCut again this year!
Join or donate to the IGS Sustainable Futures Team!
So what can you do?
Well, I’m so glad you asked! There are three simple actions YOU can take:
- Donate: IGS has its own HalfCut Team that you can support by donating. No amount is too small.
- Join us: Join our HalfCut team and get fundraising! You can braid half your hair, cut half your hair or even half a moustache, shave half of the hair of a pet, drink half a cup of coffee a day, peel half a potato or find another way! Maybe you want to eat half a tub of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream each day? Yum! Get involved!
- Share: Spread the word on social media! The HalfCut Team have a range of post templates and resources for you to use.
Fellow student Harriet Ryder is joining in.
I’m going HalfCut this year because it’s a way of enabling individuals to make real change.
The first time I did HalfCut (BraidsOn) was because of my deep passion for the environment and social activism. I’m extending those efforts this year by shaving and dyeing half of my hair to restore Traditional Custodianship and environmental conservation to the Daintree Rainforest.
While governments worldwide ignore the climate crisis around us, we can use this opportunity to achieve individual empowerment and save crucial rainforest land.
I encourage everyone to donate or sign up!
