Primary School
Student Learning in the Primary years
The primary school years provide opportunities for rich and challenging learning experiences for the children in a supportive, nurturing environment. Children develop an understanding of themselves and their world through various forms of expression including Languages, Music, Art, Drama, English and Mathematics.
Our primary program provides opportunity, challenge and support as the children grow. The school particularly focuses on the needs of each individual child, understanding the positive effect that success has on the self-esteem and future development of each child.
The program provides a learning community in the broadest sense with teachers, parents and friends involved directly in the learning. The ethos of the school is embodied in its vibrant range of learning activities which provide rigour and promote the acceptance of difference.
There is a provision for self-directed and negotiated learning experiences in the Key Learning Areas of HSIE, Science and Technology, Visual Arts and PD/H/PE. These occur in the classroom, or externally through the extensive co-curricular program.
Involvement in physical activity is important in the development of children. The Physical Education program emphasises participation for all, while allowing for involvement in competition in the Upper Primary.
Our holistic approach to schooling ensures that the ‘total child’ is catered for academically, socially and physically. Classes are not streamed at IGS in the primary school.
