An instrument and ensemble for everyone

Learn more about private music tuition and the various ensembles on offer at IGS

Tuition

Music plays a significant and integral part in the education offered at IGS, and therefore, IGS has a rich Performing Arts program. As part of the diverse range of music offerings at IGS, students are afforded the opportunity to participate in private vocal and instrumental tuition delivered by exceptional specialist music tutors.

As an extension to the private music tuition program, and as an extension to their learning in developing ensemble skills, students are expected to share their musical talents with the School Community and join the IGS Music Ensembles Program.

Ensembles

Making music in ensembles involves cooperating with others, listening to others and working harmoniously towards the goal of a performance, as well as a commitment to learning the music and attending rehearsals regularly. As an extension to their learning, and in developing ensemble skills, students are expected to join an IGS music ensemble that matches their age and level of ability.

For each ensemble, rehearsals take place before school, at lunchtime or after school once a week with music teachers and tutors. Students may join one or more large ensemble. Membership will be either by audition or at the discretion of the Ensemble Director, and your music tutor will recommend when your child is ready to join an ensemble. Smaller ensembles and Chamber Groups are extension activities and entry to these ensembles may be by invitation or audition.

Students in Year 4 and Year 5 participate in the School’s Instrumental Program and are given the opportunity to learn a band or string instrument and perform in an ensemble as part of their classroom program.

Ensembles perform at a range of functions, festivals, camps and evening concerts at various times throughout the year.
