IGS Language Educator presents at the University of Sydney

Acting Head of Languages (High School) Juliette Bates was recently invited to speak at the University of Sydney on the use of film in language classes.

Ms Bates presented on her background in language and film and the strategic use of film in class, then participated in a panel with other teachers.

Ms Bates wrote her Honours thesis in Spanish and Latin American Studies at UNSW on the representation of Indigenous people in Bolivian cinema.

At IGS, she uses film in her French and Spanish lessons to engage students.

“Films provide a snapshot of a time and place that brings students’ learning alive,” she said.

“Contemporary films bring current trends and up-to-date idioms into the learning space, while older films provide a window into significant periods in countries and cultures.”
